Hey children of the 80s and their children,

On the auspicious occasion of the 30th Birthday of the movie [NEWSFLASH: It’s actually the 30th anniversary of the date they got Saturday School. In reality, the release date was actually February 15th, 1985–my 18th birthday!], The Breakfast Club, I would like to announce the birth of The Desert Club [Pronounced Dessert] aka The Deserters, fans of The Deserted Lands series [okay, so there’s only one book and a short story out so far…]

Lizzie has a lot in common with Allison. Zach is a combo of Andrew and Brian, Duke is very much Bender and Nev’s a little like Claire, but I wasn’t really thinking of the Breakfast Club when I wrote it, more Some Kind of Wonderful. But I mentioned the Breakfast Club and my current generation of high school students seem fixated on it. So when one of my students decided she wanted to start a Fan Club, The Desert Club jumped into my head.
